The North Mississauga Soccer Club is one of the largest Soccer Club in Canada. It is a non-profit organization, with nearly 10,000 registered players run almost entirely by volunteers committed to the development of youth players and the game of soccer. Players have the option to play a various levels within the Club from recreational to competitive. In 2002 the club had three Provincial Champions and one National Championship Team.
Assignment
NMSC recognized the need for online registration and payment options, team and league management to help in the enormous task of running multiple leagues, tournaments, player clinics, referee scheduling and a Web-based application was best suited due to the number of volunteers working from multiple locations. The goal was to design and develop an application that met the following criteria:
Enabled parents and adult players to have a web based registration system allowing for multiple payment options.
Enabled the entry of player evaluations allowing for the selection of balanced teams based on ability, playing position and in the case of younger players, geographic location to playing fields.
Provided functionality to create league schedules allowing for score updates to produce league standings and update to referee scheduling module for game coverage.
Enable the Club to efficiently and cost effectively communicate with Conveners, Coaches, Managers and even individual players and their parents.
Challenges
To be able to introduce a computerized system replacing the many manual processes developed over the past 30 years with an electronic interface to the Governing Body, the Ontario Soccer Association. The decision to do so was made along the following lines:
The SQL database to contain registration data and history of all 10,000 players.
The application would provide dynamic reporting system for registration, and league results and standings throughout the seasons.
The application would utilize an "open" technology platform, which would be completely Web-based.
The application would be simple and intuitive.
The application would be built in a timely fashion.
Solution
Computan development staff utilized a rapid iterative methodology to design and build an ASP/SQL based Club Management System for the NMSC. The application makes extensive use of the data allowing for immediate access to all information required to manage the growing organization.
Result
NMSC has a complete web application suite comprised of Secure Online Registration, Team Management, League Management, interface to Referee Scheduling and newsletter broadcasting.
North Mississauga has successfully implemented the online registration module and will be managing the entire Club operations utilizing the system for the 2003 outdoor season and beyond. Many other clubs use a similar Club Management System and we expect to implement the program for additional sports clubs in the near future.
