Petrified Forest National Park, Arizona

Petrified Forest

The Petrified Forest National Park was not at all what we expected to see! There was not a tree standing anywhere! There are, however, thousands of sections of trees lying on the ground - all petrified and hard as rock.

Petrified log
The colors in these petrified logs was unbelievable. They were solid as rock, and had very vibrant coloration, often in rings as you can see here. Petrified Log Bridge

Some trees had fallen, stayed intact and petrified as whole trees. They now form a natural bridge across gulleys and dry creek beds in the area.

Petrified Logs

The kids throughly enjoyed exploring and picking up little pieces that had broken off.

Of course, they were made to empty their pockets before leaving the park!
